250 projects in 61 countries
Engaging in AIDS prevention activities in Kenyan communities, assisting with case-management of people with amputations and injuries related to the Pakistan earthquake, establishing long-term physiotherapy training in Indonesia after the tsunami, carrying out demining activities and helping prevent landmine accidents in Mozambique, and managing two rehabilitation centers in Cambodia are just some of the many initiatives Handicap International undertook in 2009 in 61 countries.
Handicap International works in countries where people with disabilities are in very vulnerable situations. As soon as the organization arrives in the field, it establishes partnerships with local associations, professionals and authorities to ensure its actions are sustainable and long-lasting. Expatriate staff provide training, expertise and technical support to local stakeholders, with the goal of sharing and transferring skills. Handicap International is the only international NGO today that acts on the behalf of people with disabilities, regardless of the nature of their disability. The organization can directly intervene at the request of a State, other international solidarity organizations, or local stakeholders.
