Lebanon: Deminers join the Beirut marathon
© Handicap International
More than thirty supporters of Handicap International’s anti-mine programme in Lebanon will take part in the 10km Beirut marathon on 27 November.
Following a route across the city, as well as taking part in a major physical challenge, they will be running in the organisation’s colours, and raising awareness of its missions among the population at large. A stand SET up at the arrival point will offer information on the organisation’s efforts to save the lives of families living in areas contaminated by mines laid during recent conflicts. Between 2007 and 2010, Handicap International, which has been present in Lebanon since 1992, helped demine areas mainly contaminated by cluster munitions in South Lebanon (Tyre region) and explosive remnants of war in the Palestinian camp of Nahr el Bared. Handicap International also provides psychological support to children and teenagers in Palestinian refugee camps. Since 2010, Handicap International has been the only NGO performing humanitarian demining activities in North Lebanon, on land contaminated by explosive devices dating from the civil war.
