11th October 2011: Still in shock after the devastation caused by typhoon Nesat on 27 September, the northern Philippines has been hit by a second typhoon – Nalgae. According to the local authorities , the two typhoons are responsible for the death of 59 people and the displacement of about three million others. About 50,000 families have sought shelter in evacuation centres, but the majority of those affected have been left to their own devices or are still trapped in inaccessible areas.

Handicap International, present in the Philippines for over 20 years through its development programmes, has immediately deployed an emergency response expert who will identify priority intervention areas and implement a prompt intervention plan.

The association will be able to rely on its knowledge of the country and its available financial and human resources to promptly launch its activities and respond to the needs of the most vulnerable people. Our teams will carry out distributions of basic goods, such as blankets, mats, and plastic sheeting.

Handicap International already intervened in the country over the last years providing assistance to people affected by natural disasters.
