Sports and Disabilities

Recognizing that sports are an important method of inclusion for people with disabilities, we have developed programmes to promote sports activities as a way to foster personal and social skills and reinforce social ties.

Sports and Disabilities

Sports to overcome exclusion!

With Vancouver’s Paralympic Winter Games approaching in March 2010, Handicap International has launched a public awareness campaign for Canadians on the topic of Sports and Disabilities:

  • Sports allow us to have fun, blow off steam, and challenge ourselves. They are a tool for social inclusion that reinforces self-esteem and autonomy, while teaching respect for others and for rules.

  • Disabilities directly affect over 600 million people worldwide and can impact anybody at any age.

On the basis of equality, everyone should have the opportunity to play sports, whether it is to win the best medals or just to relax. For this reason, Handicap International encourages people with disabilities to join in sports activities, not just in Canada, but all around the world.
