Friends of Haiti, a small informal Whitehorse organization formed after the 2010 Haiti earthquake, has been raising funds, through donation boxes and wristband sales, for Handicap International to support rehabilitation efforts and care for Haitians.
On the first anniversary of Haiti’s devastating earthquake, Yukon Friends of Haiti held an evening of short slide shows and talks about recovery efforts in the country. Speakers included: Morgan Wienberg, Joe Campana; and volunteers from Handicap International Joannie Pelletier, and Germain LeNoxaic. “The aim was to show what Yukoners and others are doing to help support the people of Haiti, and to encourage continuing aid,” said Alysha McFadden, one of the evening’s organizers. McFadden, a public health nurse, volunteered long before the earthquake hit in Haiti and has returned to Haiti to provide additional support. The talks began at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 12 at Baked Café, which donated its space for the event. Admission was by donation. YFH
